Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opener Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments from skipper Stokes about the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made those words in several conversations in the wake of his team's defeat in the second Ashes series against Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had let his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," said Stokes.

But, following Crawley made 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "weak men" observation after England were beaten in the second Test to go two matches behind.

The team afterwards took a holiday to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third matches.

Prior to this match, he said his players had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley asserted the guidance from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their previous tenure in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, play our way, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of something special entering this game."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket late on Saturday was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australia spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side 207-6 chasing a notional target of 435 runs.

This means, the home team need four wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an unassailable three-nil advantage with three matches played.

A loss will extend the English team's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth straight overseas Ashes series defeat.

This series is set to be decided in only 11 days of play – with England fell the first two Tests in two and four days each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," said Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"It's been difficult. They're a formidable side. It was inevitably hard coming here against them. They entered as the front-runners and they've proven why."

Pope's Place In Question

Although the opener's performance in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his immediate place in the side, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 in England's second innings on Saturday, extending his modest returns versus the old enemy.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and averages just 17.62.

Only one other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

But, the opener said any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said he. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is talk externally. There's no chat of that nature on Ollie in the camp," Crawley concluded.
